About Us

What is Freefall Dance?

Freefall Dance is a platform provided by students at the University of Oxford for Contemporary Movement and Performance Art and Improvised or Experimental Dance.

Freefall Dance aims to unite students from very different backgrounds (dancers, musicians, artists, actors, technicians, designers and even engineers) with a shared interest in Performance Art, Experimental Installations and Interactive Improvisation.

How does Freefall Dance Work?

Freefall Dance will provide a rehearsal space free of charge every Friday evening or Sunday morning (to be discussed) in which dancers are invited to come and dance on a drop in basis. Anyone there can choose to lead or direct the improvisation, bring material for inspiration, most importantly just bring yourselves, come relax, tune into your creative side, and perform! This 'Jam' will be followed by drinks/lunch to discuss outcome of the Jam, and also to get to know each other's interests and personalities. It is our belief that Improv best correlates the physical and sociable benefits of dance and performance.

Freefall Dance will also organise occasional workshops or special technique classes specifically dancers, taught by a mixture of students and professionals, so far we are planning some contact improv technique classes and a workshop in Afro Contemporary Dance with Maurice Yeka.

Freefall Dance is anxious to encourage more interraction between student interests in Sonic Art, Graphic Art and Performance Art.

Will Freefall Dance Perform?

Some of you may be aware of Platform, Freefall and the Dance Society's Hilary show, at Keble College's O'Reilly Theater. Freefall Dance will perform some improvised sets for Platform, this can entail as little or as much commitment as participants wish.

Any other performance setting is encouraged and will be facilitated upon request, in particular regarding outdoor installations and interactive improvisation.

Who can be a member of Freefall and how much does it cost?

Membership of Freefall is free of charge and can be registered according to interest as dancer, musician, technician etc. We do however request that you may only register as a dancer if you have training or considerable experience in either Dance, Gymnastics or something that motivates good body awareness, since you will be responsible for looking after your body and knowing its limits during activities.

How can I join Freefall Dance or make sure I am kept up to date with its activities?
